In Cyprus (2003) there were a vast number of mounds left on the landscape by companies constructing ‘paradise villas’. Smaller mounds were also made by tourists who left behind a substantial amount of their own litter. Water (Bottle) Mound is created with over a 1000 discarded empty water bottles collected from the roadsides and beaches of Paphos.
The natural formation of each mound inspired the below drawings.
The paper mounds are a conceptual re-imagining of the displacement of natural material taking place in the landscape. Each tiny piece of paper is indented with fingernail marks.
These richly-diverse mounds became part of Cyprus’s identity.
