About
The Colourfolds are a side-ways move into colour. They are hand-folded reliefs constructed from photographic lighting gels, carefully scored, folded, and sewn together, then overlaid with drafting film. This process creates a distinctive surface that shifts in hue depending on light and angle. As Tony says,
“My Colourfolds are hand-folded light-responsive reliefs where colour isn’t printed or painted but constructed from translucent layers that shift and come alive as the light changes.
I’m currently maintaining the discipline and system-based approach of my monochrome pieces through their careful scoring, folding and assembly. However, the colour is chosen intuitively, guided by feeling not rules. This deliberate move towards instinct is drawn from lived experience to carry a mood of optimism and warmth.

The Chromatica Triptych (2022)
The Chromatica Triptych (each 33 x 33 x 5cm framed) is influenced by an enigmatic stained glass window in the Abbaye aux Dames, in Saintes, France. Created later in the early 20th Century, it’s modern geometric simplicity was in contrast to the much larger stained glass windows dating from the 12th century and inspired the harmony and balance for the below pieces.
- Chromatique 1 – Magenta Red
- Chromatique 2 – Golden Hue
- Chromatique 3 – Sea Blue
