Colourfolds

Tony’s ‘Colourfolds‘ are created by cutting, scoring, folding and stitching together layers of photographic lighting gels and single matt drafting film; an acid-free polyester film traditionally used by architects. Avoiding impermanent adhesive entirely, the artwork is sewn onto its backing board using semi-transparent thread.

Each stage of the process is undertaken by hand to create a seamless surface whose colours or patterns appear to change as the angle of light, or the type of light, changes.

All artworks are framed in FSC-certified, white-stained obeche wooden box frames with UV70 non-reflective artglass.

Summer Tessellation

In Summer Tessellation, precision and restraint are applied to a vibrant, sunlit palette evoking the warmth of golden sand, the coolness of turquoise waters and the clarity of midsummer light.

Summer Tessellation, 63 x 63 x 5cm (framed), 2025

£2,450 (including £350, 63 x 63 x 5cm frame)

The Summer Shift series

The Summer Shift series is a new and ongoing that captures the rhythm and radiance of the season through precise, analogue algorithms. Using colours evocative of a sabbatical spent in Valencia during summer 2024 , the compositions contain shapes that appear to evolve in structure as travel across each surface from left to right. What appears fluid or organic is in fact mapped by controlled design.

Summer Shift not only alludes to the artworks’ shifting summer colours as they subtly change with the external light, but also to the unseen patterns such as thermal currents and solar patterns that shape our experience of a hot summer.

£1,150 each (including £160, 43 x 43 x 5cm frame). Maximum lead time on framing is three weeks.

The Colourfold Tiles

Tony’s Colourfold Tiles orginally took off as artworks that could be made at home during the pandemic. They are experiments in combining different colours and opacities of lighting gels and were intended to create small joyful explosions of colour and light for the home.  Four out of the original nine colour combinations are available to purchase  on an ‘order only’ basis with each one sold as a limited edition of five.

£395 each (including £120, 32 x 32 x 5cm frame). Maximum lead time on creating and framing is four weeks.

The Chromatica Triptych (2022)

The Chromatica Triptych (each 33 x 33 x 5cm framed) is influenced by an enigmatic stained glass window in the Abbaye aux Dames, in Saintes, France. Created later in the early 20th Century, it’s modern geometric simplicity was in contrast to the much larger stained glass windows dating from the 12th century and inspired the harmony and balance for the below pieces.

Like the above, were created from a process of scoring, folding, and stitching together layers of photographic lighting gels and single matte drafting film. (SOLD)

The ‘One-Offs’ (2022)

The following ‘Colourfolds’ are one-off artworks, each 32 x 38 x 5cm, exploring different combinations of coloured gels. Now SOLD.
